Wales Fast Growth Fifty 2000
Company Profiles
1. Intapeople Ltd
IT recruitment consultants
Turnover growth 1997-99: 1432.4%
Intapeople was established in 1994 to address a perceived need for a specialist Information Technology recruitment consultancy in Wales. Since then, it has quickly built up a reputation for its efficiency and professionalism, developing a proven track record for supplying a cost effective and honest service to a wide range of market sectors throughout the whole IT arena.
Based in Cardiff, the business has invested heavily in building a range of services and developing specialist personnel to make IT integrated resourcing a reality. As a result, it has quickly become Wales’ largest IT recruitment consultancy, competing directly with several major players within the industry. Today, it provides solutions for a range of companies that include small software/web development houses as well as large blue chip conglomerates. In addition to this, Intapeople has been granted preferred supplier status to no less than fourteen ‘household name’ companies throughout the UK and Europe.
The success of the fastest growing company in Wales this year is based on a variety of factors. Foremost amongst these is a continuing commitment to exceptional levels of service for clients and candidates alike, building long-term mutually beneficial partnerships and understanding a client’s business in both current and future terms. One of Intapeople’s underlying aims has always been to help Welsh IT professionals remain in Wales, thus ensuring that clients have access to an increasing pool of highly skilled talent. This ethos has been a huge factor in the success of the business and continues to be an integral part of the company’s philosophy. It also believes its focus on one specific niche area – that of dealing exclusively with IT recruitment – has led to specialist knowledge of its market. This, along with considerable investment in the skills and knowledge of its employees, has provided Intapeople with the stability and consistency necessary to maintain its competitive edge.
Intapeople recognises that competition within its industry is set to escalate and become even fiercer. However, it remains confident that its unique approach will continue to fuel further growth. The company also believes that the competencies and capability of its staff will ensure that the business will continue to deliver on its vision, maintaining its position at the forefront of the information technology revolution, and continuing its phenomenal growth rate during the next few years.
2. Oasis Communication Services Ltd
Mobile telecommunications retailers
Turnover growth 1997-99: 1386.5%
Oasis Communication Services Ltd is active in one of the UK’s fastest growing markets, supplying telecommunications products and services, and offering products such as mobile phones, two way radios, photocopiers and fax machines to the commercial and consumer markets. Since its inception six years ago, the company has grown to achieve a turnover of over £2.2 million and a chain of fourteen retail outlets across the country.
The two people behind this successful homegrown business are Damian Cole - a local entrepreneur who quickly realised the marketing potential of mobile communications – and Dean Williams - an experienced sales director who has considerable experience in telecommunication sales management. Their entrepreneurial drive and business acumen has enabled the development of the company to be entirely self-financed with profits constantly re-invested in order to sustain growth. This was recently highlighted by the Gwent TEC business awards, which recognised Damian and Dean’s sales and marketing skills as being the best amongst the former county’s businesses. It is therefore not surprising that the mobile phone industry’s own independent watchdog have nominated Oasis as the top local retailer for providing customers with sound advice and best matching products to customer needs.
So where next for this entrepreneurial company that has achieved a second listing in the Wales Fast Growth Fifty? It is evident that this thriving business with a turnover that has soared by over 1300% in the last three years will continue to be a thorn in the side of many of the larger operators in South Wales. It may even prove to be a prudent acquisition for one of the industry’s major players in the coming years. Until then, it is clear that the ambitions of both directors are to develop the business further and sustain its phenomenal growth, building new links outside of Wales. For example, Oasis has just entered into an agreement to place mobile phone shops across the West Country, which will effectively double the size of the business and increase employment to around thirty people by the end of this month.
3. Ocean Resource Ltd
Engineering and design consultants
Turnover growth 1997-99: 509.9%
As one of Wales’ most innovative companies, the Chepstow-based Ocean Resource Ltd is a design and engineering consultancy committed to creating and developing some of the world’s revolutionary breakthroughs in technology for the offshore and sub-sea engineering industry. Currently employing over thirty skilled and qualified staff, it is recognised as the market leader in automated, unmanned sophisticated buoy systems and is carrying out development work for some of the largest gas and oil producers in the world.
In the past, the firm has been awarded a number of prestigious projects including the contract to design one of their Sea Nova platforms for the West Millom Field. This contract has not only resulted in the company designing the platform but also taking responsibility for finding a dock in which the platform’s construction will take place. After close inspection, Ocean Resource decided that Pembroke Dock would be most suited to the task, which reflects the company’s continued commitment to Wales.
More recently, the firm was invited to attend Offshore Europe 99 in Aberdeen, a conference that centred upon new technology in the industry and which was only open to those businesses considered to be at the cutting edge of innovation within the oil and gas industry. During this event, Ocean Resource shared a stand with Mentor Subsea (a subsidiary of the major American offshore engineering company J. Ray McDermott Group), with whom it has recently signed a joint marketing venture to promote the Sea Commander and Sea Producer buoy systems. This venture is already paying dividends, attracting interest from around the globe and being one of the major contributing reasons for the re-appearance of Ocean Resource as one of Wales’ fastest growing businesses.
4. V&A Holdings International Ltd
Innovative product manufacturer and marketer
Turnover growth 1997-99: 480.2%
Based in Cardiff, V&A Holdings International Ltd is essentially an amalgamation of four divisions - V&A Marketing, V&A Coatings, V&A Windows and V&A Plastics - all of which are owned by Vic Davies and Adrian Llewellyn Jones. Last year, the business was recognised as the fastest growing company in Wales. It is therefore no surprise that it has continued its development from a small company with only six staff and a turnover of under £400,000 in 1996, to a firm employing 110 staff and a turnover in excess of £6.8million in 1999. This progress, achieved in a short space of time, has been largely achieved by using its own resources, investing £2 million in new plant and machinery over the past two years.
The largest of the firm’s divisions - V&A Marketing - was established to exploit intellectual property rights for new and innovative products. Its most successful brand to date is the world’s first non-spill toddler drinking cup - the Anywayup CupTM - that was awarded Millennium Product status by the Design Council. It is currently sold in all leading supermarkets, nursery retailers and pharmacies throughout the UK, as well as Europe, Australia and the Far East. The other subsidiaries are also very active in their markets. V&A Plastics produces a wide range of quality nursery products under the ‘Tough and Tumble’ brand name whilst V&A Coatings provides on-site respraying of shop fronts of major multiples, retailers and other commercial premises throughout the UK and Europe. Finally V&A Windows provides the sale, design, manufacture and installation of quality conservatories, doors and windows.
Since winning last year’s award, not only has the firm’s business increased but also the way in which the company is viewed within Wales has changed. Whilst V&A was relatively unknown outside industry circles, the Wales Fast Growth Fifty 1999 award has given it the platform on which to continuously develop its business philosophies and the opportunity to make the company known to the economic and political decision makers within the Principality. In fact, Vic Davies recently addressed the Assembly’s Economic Development Committee on the specific needs of small to medium sized enterprises in Wales.
The firm has ambitious plans for the future. During 2000, V&A will launch over twenty new nursery products under the ‘Tough and Tumble’ product range, with the first already having come on-stream in the new year in Mothercare, Tesco’s and Boots. Part of this new development has been as a result of the publicity surrounding the business becoming Wales’ fastest growing firm last year. As Vic Davies explains, "Mums and Dads, inventors and business people have, following the announcement of the Fast Growth Fifty last June, approached V&A with new products and ideas. Feasibility studies are currently being carried out on some of these, hand in hand with the company’s programme of new product development." These include the Anywayup Smiley CupTM, which is being launched for babies from six months and has the endorsement of the Health Education Authority as a product designed to encourage good dental hygiene from the earliest age. These innovations will ensure that V&A will continue to be rightly recognised as one of the most successful and creative businesses in Wales for many years to come.
5. Berry Ltd
Import and export of fruit and juices
Turnover growth 1997-99: 335.4%
Based in Gwynedd, Berry Ltd was formed in 1991 to service the needs of industrial users of fruits and juice concentrates. In a highly competitive industry, the business adopts the view that each new account is an achievement and is proactive in its attempts to maximise customer loyalty.
The company’s main strengths lie in its extensive knowledge of the industry, the ability to accommodate the needs of its customers and a comprehensive network of quality suppliers. These advantages not only allow the firm to enjoy lower overheads but also to build strong relationships with their client base. It continues to be committed to growth and is looking to increase turnover and profitability by expanding its current volumes with established clients.
Last year, Berry Ltd established a Welsh/Chinese joint venture - ‘Dragons Gardens’ - as a means of expanding their existing product lines and realising further growth. The company is also planning to introduce a wider range of organic products in an attempt to expand its existing market scope and maximise growth opportunities.
6. Envitech Ltd
Environmental monitoring and management services
Turnover growth 1997-99: 289.4%
Established by Jim Pickering and Colin Genner in 1989, Envitech supplies continuous pollution monitors to the environmental and industrial process market, specialising in on-line biosensor analysers, effluent monitoring, automatic samplers and flowmeters. With this expertise, Envitech can supply the technology to measure, sample or analyse any type of liquid flow.
The emergence of tighter environmental legislation and the growing need for automated and rapid environmental and process data (as well as technical expertise) led to a considerable expansion in Envitech’s core business in 1998. This enabled the company to not only enhance its technological base but also to supply a comprehensive range of equipment with experienced support and back up. Within such a market, the firm’s commitment to after-sales support has also been vital in establishing and maintaining a satisfied customer base.
As a result, Envitech is now recognised as the key UK supplier for on-line continuous BOD monitoring - the key parameter for assessing levels of organic pollution - in areas such as surface run off from runways of major UK airports (such as Gatwick and the East Midlands). Building on recent successes and growing market awareness, the business will be looking at opportunities to develop their existing package to include the control and reduction of environmental discharges. In addition, Envitech are planning an educational exercise to promote environmental measurement and control as an integral part of the production process rather than simply an end of pipe check activity. These developments should ensure that Envitech remain a major player in a growth market within Wales.

Turnover growth 1997-99: 265.0%
Currently employing twenty-nine people, SCT (Wales) Ltd offers a wide range of consultancy services including finance, sales and marketing, business development, business planning and forecasting. Its private sector customer base has also grown to over eighty customers which include Hitachi, Sony, Peter’s Savoury Products, Allied Steel and Wire and Epitaxial Products International.
According to the firm, this success is down to the wide experience and skills base of its management and staff, its unique approach to consultancy and its ability to effectively manage the improvement process with proven production techniques. In the past three years, the company has certainly benefited from this philosophy, enjoying a turnover growth in excess of 250% between 1996 and 1999. Corinthian Press has ambitious plans for the future and is continuously investing in planning and training activities as it strives to become Cardiff’s leading print and graphics company. This vision, combined with its ability to create employment without any assistance from various external support agencies, suggests that Corinthian Press may warrant further interest from these agencies as it continues along its present growth trajectory.

11. Multimedia Public Relations & Marketing
Public relations and marketing
Turnover growth 1997-99: 181.9%

Since its establishment, the company has quickly matured from sole trader operations to that of company with an evolving management team and an ability to entertain and sustain further development. Indeed, like many businesses, it experienced initial steady growth to reach a turnover of £350,000 in 1997. However, in the last three years, growth has been much more rapid and turnover had grown to exceed £1 million by 1999. However, this has not occurred merely by chance and the firm has ensured, with the assistance of the Welsh Office and local TECs, that the long term business objectives of Multimedia are being realised.
The company’s success stems from its comprehensive technical knowledge, its sound public relations and marketing expertise and the continued commitment of its workforce. The firm’s core services centre around the provision of public relations and marketing support to customers, enabling them to communicate their products and services through a wide range of media. The company has also utilised its web expertise to assist Welsh companies who wish to establish a presence on the Internet. A two year R&D project recently came to fruition in September when the H.T. 1200 Cat Pump - which recovers hot powders at temperatures up to 350 degrees - demonstrated its capabilities during a major shutdown at a Welsh oil refinery. During the next few months, this unit will be marketed around the world as an extremely versatile technology that can be used across a wide range of applications. In addition, an overseas trade mission to the Middle East last November has resulted in a number of enquiries for Cel-Vac to supply specialist vacuum recovery units, and it is anticipated that the company will deliver its first all terrain desert vehicles by the summer. Whilst the company is based in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, the utilisation of modern technology and communications has overcome any barriers that come with being in such a remote rural area, and have enabled the company to successfully access the UK, European and Middle Eastern markets.

The firm primarily promotes itself as a design agency that specialises in business to business communication. Over the past three years, the company has quickly established itself by solving the marketing problems of customers through the effective design of literature, point of sale material and websites.
Mako Creative attributes its success to a number of key factors including the attitude, experience and skills of its staff and the ability to retain business from major blue chip companies - such as Peugeot – as well as local firms. Indeed, customer retention currently stands at approximately 95% which is testament to the firm’s commitment to customer care and creative problem solving. This philosophy has been instrumental in Mako Creative’s ability to double its turnover over the past three years.
Despite previous successes, the company is still looking at ways to pursue further growth and is currently taking professional consultation on how to manage the business and growth more effectively. In addition, continuous investment in staff and equipment, combined with a planned move to a new prestigious location, will ensure that the company is well positioned to maximise opportunities for further growth.
23. Sandwich Supplies Ltd
Sandwich filling manufacturer and distributor
Turnover growth 1997-99: 109.6%
Originally established as a partnership in 1990, Sandwich Supplies Ltd was founded in 1992 by Kent Davis and Piers Thomas with the intention of manufacturing and distributing a range of high quality sandwich fillings to the growing sandwich making industry. From a starting point of zero turnover and no employees, the company now enjoys a turnover that is fast approaching £10 million and employs over 100 full time staff. The business - ranked 18th in last year’s Wales Fast Growth Fifty - manufactures over 25 tonnes of product each week, which it delivers twice a week in its own liveried vehicles to customers across the UK from Cornwall to Scotland. As a result of this investment and growth, the company is now responsible for the filling in one in every 125 sandwiches purchased in the UK, and has become the largest supplier of fillings to the catering and food service industries.
The recent purchase of a 25,000 square foot unit in Cwmbran has ensured the continued job security for existing staff. However, plans to supply a retail product to the supermarkets should also create new employment opportunities in the future and provide a platform from which the company can successfully launch a market floatation.
24. Strategic Marketing
Strategic marketing consultants
Turnover growth 1997-99: 106.0%
Enhancing the market place performance of its clients is the simple philosophy that underpins the activities of Strategic Marketing. Having started its drive for expansion in 1992, the business focuses on helping its clients find, win and keep customers through an integrated approach to marketing consultancy, market research and telephone marketing. An increasing proportion of the company’s consultancy and research work is in the development of customer relationship management programmes and recent clients for this type of the work include Rockwool Ltd and the Welsh Development Agency.
Telephone marketing is the company’s most recent service and was introduced in 1996, initially to service the growing demand for high quality, inward investment enquiries for economic development agencies. Its consultancy and research skills enabled Strategic Marketing to develop a new approach to board level selling that consistently delivered excellent results and value for money. This has resulted in considerable repeat business and a growing number of private sector clients that appreciate the company’s ability to secure high level sales appointments.
Strategic Marketing has also grown a specialist labour market and economic development capability for public sector clients across the UK, and new product and market development studies, marketing effectiveness and new media strategies are typical of projects undertaken for clients. Despite its success in Wales, one of the challenges for Strategic Marketing is building its client base outside of Wales. However, it has started to achieve its aims in this market, recently winning a contract with the Department of the Environment to develop a marketing strategy for the Energy Efficiency Best Practice Programme.
Strategic Marketing’s clients have repeatedly stated that the company’s success is due to the close working relationship its staff build and maintain whilst working on projects. Clients value the open approach to discussing future projects and ideas, regarding the company as very much part of their internal team. As a service business, Strategic Marketing is only as good as the people it employs and developing staff and finding new employees with the right mix of experience, qualifications and good interpersonal skills is critical to the company’s future growth. Rigorous recruitment procedures and a programme of continuous internal and external training are vitally important to maintain the business’ competitive position.
The company continues to go from strength to strength and indications for the current year are that Strategic Marketing will grow to be almost three times larger than it was in 1997.

As a result, the company’s primary focus changed to that of supplying coaches and quality service to tour operators throughout the UK and Europe at a competitive price.
During the last five years, this service (combined with the experience and knowledge of its founder) has seen the company enjoy substantial growth by providing a high standard of service. 41. Dublcheck Ltd
Cleaning franchisor
Turnover growth 1997-99: 68.4%
Every year, 40% of British companies replace their cleaning contractors because they are dissatisfied with quality. Since cleaning shops or offices is often unpleasant work, performed during unsociable hours by low-paid and poorly motivated staff, it is always a challenge to maintain standards. Dublcheck has simply based its success on finding a solution to the problem - it sells franchises. Duncan Stewart suggests that ‘it is a franchise which has wide ranging appeal because everyone can clean and with training, based on the British Institute of Cleaning Science, methods and the backing of our sales team who quickly generate clients, ensure the franchisee is quickly operating to our standards, with a guaranteed turnover’. In addition to providing a significant income for franchisees, Duncan Stewart is confident that Dublcheck will continue to thrive and has set an ambitious target of the company establishing 750 franchises in the next five years, a figure that the company and its advisors feel confident of achieving.

Pegasus Abrasives is predominantly a construction orientated firm with its own shops and several outlets in builders and engineering merchants.
